Born in the Bronx, New York, Archbishop Edwin O’Brien was named 15th Archbishop of Baltimore in 2007 upon the retirement of William Cardinal Keeler. After ordination to the priesthood, he served as civilian chaplain at the United States Military Academy at West Point before joining the Army and rising to the rank of Captain. His service included a tour of duty in Vietnam. Following his military service, he received a doctorate in sacred theology from the Angelicum University in Rome and returned to work in the Archdiocese of New York. He was twice Rector of St. Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie, interrupted by a four-year term as Rector of the Pontifical North American College in Rome. In 1996, he was named Auxiliary Bishop of New York in 1996 and, in the following year, co-adjutor of the Archdiocese of the Military Services, U.S.A, where he served until his appointment to Baltimore. In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI named Archbishop O’Brien Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem and elevated him to the College of Cardinals in 2012. His motto is Pastores Dabo Vobis (“I Will Give You Shepherds”).
