On March 20, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI named William E. Lori the 16th Archbishop of Baltimore, succeeding His Eminence Edwin Cardinal O’Brien, who had been named Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. A native of Kentucky and priest of Washington, D.C., he received his doctorate in sacred theology from The Catholic University of America and worked for many as priest-secretary to James Cardinal Hickey. Consecrated a bishop in 1995, he was first Auxiliary Bishop of Washington, D.C. and then Bishop of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Archbishop Lori is currently the Supreme Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus and Vice-President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. His motto is Caritas in Veritate (“Charity in Truth”).
