Can your
computer get infected by a virus?
If you've ever wondered if you're more vulnerable to computer
viruses by subscribing to our mailing list -- or other mailing
lists -- here are some important facts you should know:
There is no way that parish email can send a virus to you
through the parish mailing list because we are running and
frequently updating protection software on our computers. We
require it for anyone in the parish who is permitted use of the
mailing lists for sending out parish news. All must use virus
protection software -- or else give the news to one of the
parish webmasters, and we will send their news for them to you
via our secure computers.
Therefore, if you get hit with a virus by email, we can be
sure it did not come from the Cathedral's website.
However, it is possible to get hit through other lists or
from your friends unwittingly. No one should remain vulnerable
to viruses from any source. Take these simple precautions:
- NEVER open an attachment in an email UNLESS you are sure
you understand what it is and why it's been sent to you.
When in doubt, delete. You can always write back to the
person who sent it and ask if they intended to send an
attachment and to please explain what it was and then resend
it. Most viruses are trigged by unwitting victims opening an
attachment.
- INSTALL PROTECTION SOFTWARE -- NOW! Once you have it, you
will help stop the spread of viruses. If you don't have it,
you will sooner or later regret leaving yourself so
vulnerable.
Here are just a few of the many anti-virus programs out
there:
housecall.antivirus.com/
(both web and pc based, free web use)
mcafee.com/
(both web and pc based, free web trial)
symantec.com/nav/
(pc based)
datafellows.com/products/anti-virus/ (pc
based for networks)
- Find out what's NOT a virus and don't clog up the internet
spreading false alarms. When you get word of a virus, take a
minute to check it out first, before forwarding the message
to others and embarrassing yourself. Here's a great site for
this research:
