The Church begins the Sacred Triduum by commemorating the institution of the Eucharist and the Priesthood. We remember Jesus' command of love and service with the washing of feet, and the Eucharist is carried in solemn procession to a place of reservation where all keep vigil with the Lord, giving thanks for the offering of His life for our salvation.

The Mass on this "night of nights" begins in darkness with the blessing of the new fire and Paschal Candle and the chanting of the Easter Proclamation, the Exsultet. After an extended Liturgy of the Word (when various stages of salvation history are proclaimed), new members of the Church are initiated through the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. Then, all join together for the first Eucharist of Easter. |
