| Dedication
Ceremony
Every tree selected as a memorial will be blessed in a special
dedication ceremony by a priest of the Cathedral with family and
friends in attendance. A special granite and bronze marker,
identifying the honored person or group and the donor, will be put
in place. A sample granite and bronze marker is already in place
on the Cathedral grounds for your inspection.
How To Select Your Tree As A
Living Memorial
The Cathedral grounds have many lovely areas, any one of which
might hold special meaning for you or a loved one. If you prefer
to dedicate a particular type of tree, you are likely to find one
or more planted on the grounds. Dogwood, holly, maple, birch, oak,
Bradford pear, magnolia, weeping willow and many other species are
part of the Cathedral's master landscape plan.
You may wish to familiarize yourself with the Cathedral grounds
and the landscaping plans before selecting your tree. You can also
refer to an up-to-date list of tree memorials kept in the Rectory.

Beauty To Be Restored and
Protected
The original plan for the Cathedral provided for landscaping
the grounds surrounding the new structure with a "setting of
harmonizing grace and variety." Over 30,000 shrubs and trees
were planted, and carefully clipped hedges and lawn areas were
created.
However, the generous bequest providing for the construction of
the Cathedral complex, made almost a century ago, did not
anticipate the ever-rising costs of repair and maintenance of the
structure and the surrounding grounds. Controlling the costs
resulted in a diminishing of the plant and tree population.
To solve the problem, a Preservation Trust was formed to fund
the major repairs and maintenance required for now and into the
future, based on a long range plan. This plan includes completing
the original objective of a beautiful and inspirational setting
for the Cathedral. Landscaping improvements with new plantings are
already being implemented.
Much is left to be done, and maintenance must be diligent... All
of us can help by contributing to the Preservation Trust.
Throughout
the year,
They create a sense of peace
And moments for meditation.
The bright sunlight of early spring
Touches the first leaves with joy of renewal.
There is awe of the work of the Creator
As the trees blossom with varied colors
In summer, trees suggest a journey's pause
And a world forever green.
The sudden burst of vivid autumn hues
Brings reflective moments
With thoughts of life's harvest and thanksgiving.
The empty branches, in winter,
Form patterns against the sky.
Delicate as memory, they reach out
In prayer that will be answered
For new life.
The Cathedral trees stand
Season to season
As living memorials
Of faith, hope, rebirth
And God's love. |
