 Boy Scout Troop 1000

Boy Scout Troop 1000

Troop 1000 is a chartered Boy Scouts of America (BSA) troop sponsored by Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, a Catholic parish at 5200 N. Charles Street in north Baltimore, Maryland.

The Troop was founded in 1963 and led for 20 years by Arthur Eby, who remained active in Scouting as a member of the Troop Committee and in the parish as an usher (among other volunteer roles) until his death in 2006.

Troop 1000 recognizes the importance of character development of young men and stresses the ideals of Scouting as well as providing them opportunities for leadership. The troop is divided into patrols (normally boys of similar age and school grade), each with a leader and assistant who serve for a six month period and report to a Senior Patrol Leader.

They help run meetings, plan trips, organize cooking and clean-up on camp-outs, and appoint tasks to others, etc. Every boy who stays involved in Scouting gets a chance to serve in one or more of these positions.

Troop 1000 is considered a high-adventure troop, meaning that in addition to regular monthly trips and summer camp, its older scouts normally attend each year a special BSA High Adventure camp or something equivalent.

In the past few years, for example, boys and adult leaders have spent two weeks in the summer at Philmont (NM) and Florida Sea Base (BSA camps); special Troop 1000 trips to Germany for multiple outdoor activities along with visiting castles and museums; England for canal boating; Ireland for biking; the Adirondacks for canoeing and mountain hiking; and Utah and Colorado for rafting, mountain biking and hiking, horseback-riding and visiting National Parks and Monuments.

Troop 1000 also is active in the community.  Each Eagle project normally consumes 100+ hours of volunteer time to a worthy cause.  Eagle Scouts from Troop 1000 have helped renovate abandoned homes in run-down neighborhoods, clear debris and prune vegetation in public parks, and refurbish inner-city classrooms.

The Troop also has sponsored and participated in many other public service projects including serving annually as honor guard for Maryland Day.
