The shrine in the sacristy is dedicated to Saint John Baptist de la Salle, 17th century founder of the Christian Brothers.

The seal of his institute occupies the left door of the triptych. On the right hand side is his family coat of arms.

The Christian Brothers began their ministry in the United States in 1845 here in Baltimore, when they opened what is now Calvert Hall.

The shrine now serves as the repository for the sacred oils of the Archdiocese (in the silver urns), which the Cardinal blesses at the Chrism Mass each year during Holy Week. These are the oils used for Baptisms, Confirmation and the Anointing of the Sick.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me;
He has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
to heal the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty for captives,
to set prisoners free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn...
to bestow on them
a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning.
(Isaiah 61:1-3)
