The Statue was blessed by Giovanni Cardinal Montini, then the successor to Saint Charles Borromeo as Cardinal Archbishop of Milan. Cardinal Montini visited the Cathedral in 1960 only a few years before being elected Pope Paul VI in 1963.

The Latin text on either side of the statue translates: "Guard Your Church, O Lord, under the protection of Saint Charles."
