The Memorial Chapel honors the outstanding generosity of Mr. Thomas O'Neill, the sole benefactor who provided the funds for the building of this Cathedral.

The Chapel is dedicated to Saint Thomas More, the 16nth century chancellor in England who was hanged by King Henry VIII when he refused to deny the primacy of the Pope and proclaim Henry head of the newly formed Anglican Church. Thomas More was chosen as the saint for this chapel because, like Thomas O'Neill, he was a married layman serving God by going about his daily life.
