The pillars of the baldachin are decorated with several different interwoven themes:

  1. The marks of the Church: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic
  2. Purposes of the Mass: worship, gratitude, supplication, and penitence
  3. The four cardinal doctrines: Creation, Incarnation, Resurrection, and Mystical Body
  4. Four emblems of sacrifice: a lamb, the instruments of Christ' suffering, the Eucharist, and the Bread of Life.
