The sanctuary of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen is unique in its design.

The baldachin (from the Italian word for balcony) and the high altar beneath it sit on a foundation that is entirely separate from that of the rest of the Church. This remarkable feat recalls in physical form the ancient concept of the church as built around an altar.

With the renewal of the Sacred Liturgy following the Second Vatican Council, which required an altar that allowed the priest to face the people, a new altar was constructed and placed in the center of the sanctuary.

Click on the high altar to see it up close.
