Both of the stone panels in this bay point to the importance of works of mercy and constant prayer in the Christian family.
The stone panel to the left shows Mother Mary McAuley, 19th century foundress of the Sisters of Mercy. Near the bottom of the panel are symbols for the merciful works the Sisters of Mercy have continued to do since their founding for the homeless, the naked, the thirsty, the hungry, the imprisoned and the dead. The text is one of the Beatitudes, Matthew 5:7. Deeds of mercy show the kinship of the Christian family.
The stone panel to the right shows Saint Augustine with his mother, Saint Monica. Saint Monica prayed incessantly for the conversion of her son. After her death at the Roman seaport of Ostia (the symbol of the ship), Saint Augustine did convert. Here he is seen praying for her as he offers Mass (far right).
