The Transfiguration: Who is Jesus?
Altar of St. John Vianney
Saint John Mary Vianney (1786-1856) is the patron saint of
parish priests. Also known as the Curé d'Ars, he struggled
through seminary, almost failing, because academics were so
difficult for him. He persevered, however, and the bishop
ordained him.
He was sent to the small inconsequential town of Ars, where
he served as the parish priest. A man of great holiness and
compassion, he became renowned for his pastoral ability. He was
especially known for his skill as a confessor; people came from
miles away (no easy thing in those days) to go to him for
confession. Toward the end of his life, he spent eighteen hours
a day hearing confessions, taking time out only to eat and
sleep.
The window above St. John Vianney's altar uses the
Transfiguration of Jesus for its central theme.
