Christ Is Born
Altar of Saint Vincent de Paul
The window and stone panels in this bay focus
on the birth of Christ.
The altar is dedicated to Saint Vincent
DePaul (1576-1660), the patron saint of charitable
organizations. He was the first person who organized aid to the
poor so that the generosity of donors could reach as many needy
as possible.
He was a very holy French priest who founded
both the Vincentians and the Daughters of Charity, whose members
have long served in the Archdiocese. A member of the American
branch of the Daughters of Charity is Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton,
the first native born American saint.

The three woodcarvings on the
left recall the Charity of (1) God, of (2) Christ and of (3) the
Holy Spirit.
Those on the right show: (1) Along with the Saint's
signature, the coat of arms of Pope Urban VIII, who approved the
Congregation of the Mission, founded by Vincent for preaching
among the poor of the city and countryside; (2) Christian love
as proved by keeping God’s commandments and by service for
others such as Vincent’s aid to prisoners, and (3) Vincent's
efforts through lotteries and letters to win help for the poor.
"Touch" the symbol of Christ to look at scenes
of His birth that are displayed in this bay.
