Now we're looking back through the doors into the narthex. Above it is the gallery, which was built to hold the choir during sacred celebrations.

The building is designed acoustically so that the sound travels from here throughout the whole Cathedral.

On the back of the gallery, there rises a huge stone carving embedded in a stained glass window, more than twenty feet tall -- a mirror image of Christ the Risen King of the Universe that we saw on the outside facade.

The window takes as its theme the threefold role of Christ. In the upper panels, there's a crown and scepter representing Christ as king. In the center panels, a chalice and stole represent Christ as priest. In the lower panels, a trumpet and scroll represent Christ as prophet. Through our Baptism, we all share in these roles.

The window is the product of the Gabriel Loire Company of Chartres, France, which also made the three rose windows. To see a better view of this image of Christ the King, click on the photo above.

To get up to the gallery, we have to go back into the
narthex and climb the stairway. Let's dash over there!
