The carvings between the center doors outline Mary's role in salvation history. The panels above the main doors show the Birth of Jesus and the Assumption of Mary.
Flanking this, at the base of the left tower, above the door is a scene of the raising of the widow's son. The widow is an allegory for Mary as she intercedes for us with her Son. Above this is the coat of arms of Pope Pius XII, who was pope when the Cathedral was begun.
Above the door at the base of the right tower is the miracle at the wedding feast of Cana, Christ's first miracle, which he performed at the request of his mother. Above this is the coat of arms of Archbishop Keough.
