| Just above the center
doors is Mary being crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth,
the patroness of the Cathedral. |
 |
Heavenly Father, You
blessed the Virgin Mary with the fullness of grace. She
is my model of faith, hope, and love. |
|

|
 |

|
| Above her crown, the Holy
Spirit descends, by whose overshadowing power Christ as
conceived.
Mary stands on
a serpent that represents the fall from grace in Genesis;
Mary is the new Eve, full of grace, crushing the head
of the serpent.

 |
| Dear
Jesus, place my needs into the protection of her
queenship and motherly love. With her help, I want
my faith to grow. Join my heart, dear Lord, to her
Immaculate Heart, and from there, to Your loving
heart.
Amen. |

Surrounding the main doors are symbols of Mary (rose, symbol of
her love; lily, symbol of her purity; and pomegranate, symbol of
the power of her Divine Son), which can also be found throughout
the cathedral.

Also here, one can find the state flower of Maryland, the
Black-eyed Susan, which was chosen because it has black and yellow
colors, the colors of the Calvert family crest.
