| One of the most beautiful elements of the Cathedral is the
collection of stained glass windows. These windows, while
providing a unified whole are actually the work of nine
different companies, seven American and two French. The symphony
of color and design contains a treasury of religious symbolism
and embraces the full panoramic sweep of spiritual history, both
biblical and ecclesiastical.
The clerestory windows, which are the topmost windows in the
Cathedral, generally depict the influence and indwelling of the
Holy Spirit. Click on the windows in the photo below to see one
such windows (it will download into a new browser window).

The windows along the nave, the main body of the church, have
a double unifying theme: Liturgy and Saints.

Starting from the back end of
the Church, the windows follow the Church's liturgical year,
from the first Sunday of Advent to the last Sunday after
Pentecost. Intertwined with this is the calendar of the
saints, from December to November, following the liturgical
year.
The windows are interspersed with the interior buttresses.
The panels gracing the faces of these buttresses are
the work of four different artists. They were carved by
hand "on location" from finished models.
